ORANGI PILOT PROJECT

RESEARCH AND TRAINING INSTITUTE  (OPP-RTI)

LOW COST HOUSING PROGRAMME

A THE PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED

1. Houses in Orangi were made of hand made concrete blocks and tin/asbestos roofs.

2. They were made of poor quality.

3. Building component manufacturers sold materials, gave advice and helped the owners with credit to build their houses.

4. All work was done manually and both materials for construction and artisanal skills were poor.

5. The result was housing of low quality and poor detailing such as above.....

6. ... sagging roofs and cracks in walls.

The problems identified by  survey are as follows:

-  use of substandard manually made concrete blocks - the main building components for walls and foundation - caused cracks.

-  faulty construction techniques were used due to the ignorance, as well as the quick fix attitude of masons and house owners.

-  the existing structure being weak could not take the load of the conventional RCC roof, for ground plus one construction.

-  faulty ventilation
